The Bible often depicts spiritual conditions and character with animals. Beginning with satan and the serpent, a continuous line of animals are used to describe the traits of demon spirits as well as the finer qualities of believers.

Why? Better question: Should be look at spiritual beings and their traits with these same insights today, or have we moved beyond the need for it?
